MENTAL HEALTH UNIT
SURI SERI BEGAWAN HOSPITAL KUALA BELAIT
The Mental Health Unit is situated in the hospital ground of Suri Seri Begawan Hospital Kuala Belait. Historically the Mental Health Unit has been under the governance of Suri Seri Begawan Hospital since 1972. At that time, the Unit was used as a Psychiatric Ward, Tuberculosis Ward and Geriatric Ward. It only functioned as a specialist Mental Health Unit catering for the psychiatric clients in 1986 providing Inpatient Ward and Outpatient Clinic. By 1995 the Mental Health Unit was able to provide an active Day Care and Community Mental Health services.
At present the Mental Health Unit offers services such as:
1. Inpatient Mental Health Ward:
The Inpatient Ward comprised of Ward 16 and 17: Ward 16 is provided for male inpatients with capacity of 8 beds, 2 acute rooms and 1 isolation room. Ward 17 is provided for female inpatients with capacity of 6 beds, 2 acute rooms, 1 assessment room and 1 isolation room.
This ward operates 24 hours where the nurses and support staff work on shift duty. Phone: +673 3335331 ext 3152
2. Outpatient Mental Health Clinic:
The Outpatient Mental Health Clinic is open during office hours 5 days a week except public holidays.
The clinic provides services such as:
- New referral assessments (assessments are received from other doctors in primary health clinics, and other hospital services)
- Follow-up and review of patients
- Prescribing and reviewing medicine when necessary
- Preventing relapses of illness and monitoring compliance with medication.
- Psychotherapy and Counselling
We also provide community psychiatry clinics to Seria Health Clinic twice a month and to Sg Liang Clinic once a month.

3. Mental Health Day Care Centre:
Clients who attend the centre are provided with guidance and rehabilitation in order to improve their independence and quality of life in the community. The Day Care Centre provides patients with a rehabilitation programme which includes physical, social and mental health activities.
This centre is open 5 days a week except Friday and Sunday and public holidays, from 8am until 4pm. Phone: +673 3335331 ext 3249
4. Community Mental Health Services:
Community Mental Health Services have been started since 1995. It covers for the whole Belait District. It gives support to the clients and the family members in the home by making daily home visits, where the staff will visit patients and their families, assess the home environment and review the patient's progress. 5. Child Psychiatry Clinic:
This clinic was started in 2005 located in the Mental Health Outpatient facility. It takes place once a month. The clinic offers consultation for children and adolescent by the age of 3 years till 18 years. Phone: +673 3335331 ext 3249
