Introduction

The Environmental Health Services was established in the early 1950s stemming from the investigation on the prevalence of malaria in Brunei Darussalam by a group of researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally in 1962, the Brunei Government has organized malaria control activities and established the National Malaria Eradication Services (NMES) with the assistance from the WHO. The NMES was then assigned as a section within the Environmental Health Division, Department of Medical & Health Services, in 1966.

With time, the work scope, range of services, programs and work force expanded. On the 18th September 1999, with the reformation of the Organizational Structure of the Department of Medical & Health Services, the Environmental Health Division was elevated to the Department of Health Services which is headed by a Director General. In February 2004, the Environmental Health Services, led by a Director, was established.
