Who are they?

Laboratory Assistant
They collect and prepare samples; clean, maintain and set up equipments for use; and may carry out simple laboratory tests. With experience and sometimes with further studies, it is possible to become Technicians.

Technicians
The undertake similar duties too but more complex than the Laboratory Assistant and may also supervise other staff. They do most of the routine laboratory testing and prepare standard solutions for use in the laboratory. With experience and sometimes with further studies it is possible to became Technologists.

Technologists
They have more training and responsibilities. They perform more complex tests, work with minimal supervision and often have to supervise other laboratory staff.

Scientific Officers
They are degree holders in Medical Laboratory Technology or related fields. They supervise the work of other laboratory staff and advise medical practitioners on the choice and interpretation of laboratory tests.

Purposes
As a laboratory personnel you assist Health Centre Team in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients by collecting, performing analytical testing, assessing, interpreting and reporting patient result in accordance with standards of medical practice.

 

What do we do in the laboratory?

Clinical Chemistry
Perform routine and specialized chemistry test to assist doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients.

Histopathology
Process of biopsy samples taken from patients during surgery or post-mortem examinations for microscopic examination by the pathology.

Cytopathology
Prepare and stain smears of body tissue or fluids and examine them under the microscope, to detect cancer cells or cell changes that may lead to cancer or any other diseases.

Haematology / Blood Transfusion
Examine blood; study its disorder so that blood related diseases can be diagnosed. They work out the suitability of blood for transfusion.

Microbiology
Culture, isolated, identify and perform sensitively tests on bacteria.

Virology / Immunology / Serology
Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests to detect the presence of antigen/antibody in blood or samples taken from patients.
