Malaria Vigilance, Entomology and Vector Control Unit
MINISTRY OF HEALTH Brunei Darussalam had been declared malaria free since 1987. But, global malaria situation and the risk of reintroduction of then disease into the country, Vector Control, Entomology and Malaria Vigilant Unit remain committed in carrying out activities to prevent the indigenous transmission and reintroduction of the malaria into the country.
This is done through epidemiological surveillance, spraying operations and chemoprophylaxis for travellers and military personnel undergoing jungle training in the country due to the presence of zoonotic simian malaria in Brunei jungle. All foreign workers need to do pre departure and on arrival medical check for malaria. All cases reported malaria cases since 1987 until now are imported cases.
In addition, these units are responsible for immediate prevention and control of other vector borne disease likes dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever, Chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis and others.
Vector borne diseases and vectors under the Infectious Disease Act (Chapter 204), 2010 Negara Brunei Darussalam:
- Malaria with Anopheles mosquitoes
- Lymphatic Filariasis with Mansonia and Culicine mosquitoes
- Dengue Fever / Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever with Aedes mosquitoes
- Japanese Encephalitis with Culicine mosquitoes
- Plague with fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis)
- Yellow Fever with Aedes mosquitoes
- Murine Typhus with fleas as vector and Scrub Typhus with mites
- West Nile Fever with Culicine and Aedes mosquitoes
- Leptospirosis with Rodent (urine)
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
(1) To reduce the morbidity and mortality of vector borne diseases so that they will no longer be a public health problem
(2) To prevent the re-occurrence of vector borne diseases in areas where there are no cases at present
(3) To prevent the introduction of emerging and re-emerging vector borne diseases such as Chikungunya, West Nile Encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis, Yellow fever, Typhus, Kala-azar, Plague and others
(4) To utilize appropriate technologies including chemicals, equipment which are suitable for the individual, community and the environment
(5) To create awareness on the dangers of vector borne diseases in order to obtain the greater community participation towards the eradication of vector borne diseases.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To maintain the Brunei Malaria free status since 1987
- To eliminate the Lymphatic filariasis by 2017
- To reduce the disease burden and death due to dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever
- To prevent the spread and outbreak of Chikungunya
- To reduce morbidity and mortality of population at risk of Japanese encephalitis
- To prevent the importation of yellow fever
- To prevent the reintroduction of plague
- To prevent the introduction of others vector borne diseases
FUNCTIONS:
The vector borne diseases control consists of various strategic plans and organized programs for the vigilance, elimination, control and prevention of diseases. Applying integrated vector management (IVM) and to get more effective, cost effective, ecologically sound and sustainable in vector control in the country.
(1) Malaria Vigilance Unit
This unit responsible for prevention of reappear or reintroduction of malaria into the free status country and control of others vectors borne diseases.
- Malaria blood sample for people from venerable areas and interior part of country as well as border area
- Carry out regular chemical control (ULV) within indigenous villages along the border areas to neighbouring country and hi potency for malaria vector
- All reported malaria cases investigate properly
- Malaria prophylaxis and health education for international travellers and deep jungle outbound traveller in country
(2) Entomology Unit
This section involved in monitors the prevalence, distribution and density of public health important vectors
- Activities Aedes vigilance survey on land areas
- Activities Aedes agepti control in Kg Ayer
- Involved in National program for elimination Lymphatic Filariasis
- Entomological investigation of vector borne disease including Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, JE and others
- Monitoring of vector susceptibility to insecticide
- Activities in public education and promotion including cleaning campaign, dengue free school and others
(3) Vector Control Unit
- Vector control activities for public complaint for mosquito, houseflies, cockroach, rats and others
