Brief Introduction

The Department of Paediatrics at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for children in the country, consisting of a 199-bedded facitity to include a Neonatal Unit, a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, Haemato-Oncology ward and 3 general wards. 

The Department of Paediatrics was established in 1978. Over the years, the Department of Paediatrics has advanced significantly whereby subspecialisation in Paediatrics care has been established over the years in stages and new subspecialties continue to be explored in our effort to ensure the children of Brunei Darussalam enjoy the best and most updated treatment and care modalities.

  • General inpatient wards

  • Subspecialty clinics
  • Immunisation service for high-risk paediatric patients
Neonatal Services
  • Early antenatal and pre-delivery counseling for parents with high-risk pregnancies
  • Attendance at high-risk deliveries
  • Resuscitation of sick newborns
  • Neonatal intensive care, including:
    • High-frequency oscillatory ventilation
    • Total parenteral nutrition
    • Pre- and post-operative care for surgical neonates
    • In-house ultrasonography (USS) for cranial USS and echocardiograms
  • Postnatal ward care for well newborns rooming-in with mothers
  • Follow-up neonatology outpatient clinics for babies needing early medical care
  • Universal newborn screening for:
    • Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
    • Congenital hypothyroidism (since 1991)
    • Congenital hip dislocation and congenital heart disease (during newborn examination)
    • Hearing impairment (Otoacoustic Emission [OAE] and Automated Auditory Brainstem Response [AABR] since 2015)
  • Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity (since 2002)
Paediatrics Cardiology
  • Neonatal and paediatric cardiology
  • 2D echocardiogram, fetoechocardiogram, transoesophageo-echocardiogram
  • Electrocardiogram, 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram
  • Exercise treadmill
  • Emergency balloon atrial septostomy
  • Adult congenital heart disease follow-up
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Offers multi-disciplinary Paediatric intensive care for both medical and surgical patients.
  • Includes post-operative care for:
    • Neurosurgery
    • Orthopaedic surgery
    • Otolaryngologic surgery
    • Cardiothoracic surgery
Paediatric Gastroenterology
  • Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, including the long-term follow up of post-liver transplant patients
  • Paediatric Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Colonoscopy
  • Therapeutic Endoscopy
Paediatric Haemato-Oncology
  • Comprehensive range of services for children with cancer and blood disorders.
  • Part of a multi-disciplinary team, including:
    • Medical and surgical specialists
    • Nursing professionals
    • Allied health professionals
Paediatric Endocrine
  • Care for children with hormone-related conditions, including:
      • Childhood diabetes
      • Thyroid disorders
      • Adrenal and pituitary problems
      • Disorders of sexual development and maturation
      • Bone disorders
  • Essential Diagnostic Tests:
    • Dynamic stimulation tests for endocrine deficiency
    • Hormonal suppression tests for endocrine hypersecretion
    • Water deprivation tests
  • Specialized Treatments:
    • Paediatric insulin pump therapy (including advanced hybrid closed-loop system)
    • Bisphosphonate therapy for bone mineralization disorders
    • Hormonal replacement therapy for deficiencies, including:
      • Growth hormone therapy
      • Induction of puberty for adolescents
      • GnRH analogues for central precocious puberty
  • Late Effects Clinic:
    • Reviews childhood cancer survivors experiencing endocrine effects from cranial irradiation and chemotherapy.
  • Paediatric Diabetes Service:
    • Comprehensive diabetes education and counseling.
    • Use of continuous glucose monitoring devices.
    • Regular diabetes-related workshops for children and families.
Paediatric Neurology
  • EEG:
    • Conducted for children with seizures, epilepsy, or acute neurological deterioration.
    • Reported by a paediatric consultant specializing in epilepsy.
  • Immunotherapy:
    • Day case immunotherapy for immunological conditions affecting the brain and spine.
Paediatric Nephrology
  • Dialysis service
  • Paediatric Nephrology Clinic (since 2009)
