DISEASE CONTROL DIVISION The Disease Control Unit was initially formed in 1991 as a small unit under the then Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health. Over the years, it has progressed significantly and expanded in term of its functions and capacities. In 2003, it was renamed as the Disease Control Division (DCD) and placed under Environmental Health Services of the Department of Health Services. Further restructuring in 2009 had placed Nationadl Tuberculosis Control Programme under DCD. Since its establishment, DCD has managed several major disease outbreaks and responded to several public health related emergencies. These include, but not limited to, the cholera outbreak in 1999, anthrax scares post September-11, the threats of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and H5N1 avian flu outbreaks in 2003 and 2005 respectively, and the hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) outbreaks in schools 2006. DCD was further tested in 2009 with the pandemic of Influenza A(H1N1).
