MONITORING AND SURVEILLANCE OF WORKERS’ HEALTH

Benefits of Pre-employment and Periodic Medical Examinations

These examinations are beneficial to both employers and employees:

  • Employers will benefit by recruiting a medically fit person to perform the specific job or task he is recruited for.
  • They are beneficial to employees as these examinations will enable the early detection and treatment of undiagnosed conditions which in turn will reduce the complications that may arise if the condition was left undetected and related hospital admissions.
  • Employees are also educated on occupational health and safety matters and other general health issues e.g. diet, weight reduction, smoking cessation, etc during the time of medical examinations.
  • Maintenance of a healthy work force with a low sickness absence and reduced health premiums.
1.1 Pre-employment Medical Examinations

 Objective:

  • To determine whether the prospective employee is fit to work in the particular job which he/she has applied for (without risk to himself, his co-workers or to general public).

Components of the examination:

  • A detailed medical and occupational history will be filled by the prospective employee in the pre-employment examination form.
  • The prospective employee will then have to undergo general and job specific laboratory investigations.
  • An appointment date will be given to the prospective employee to attend for the assessment by the doctor.
  • A physical examination will be conducted by the doctor on the appointment date. The nature and emphasis of the examination will vary with the job requirement. Further investigations or referrals may need to be done before a final assessment and report of fitness can be made.
