On 18 September 1968, haemodialysis was first performed in Ward 14 of the old General Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan, marking the introduction of Kidney Replacement Therapy (KRT) in Brunei Darussalam. Before then, patients with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) were managed conservatively. With the gradual introduction and expansion of KRT, renal services grew steadily to meet the rising demand, eventually leading to the establishment of the Department of Renal Services.
Today, the Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, including all three forms of KRT — haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation — as well as chronic kidney disease (CKD) clinics. There are seven haemodialysis centres across the four districts, together with peritoneal dialysis units in Rimba and Kuala Belait. The local kidney transplant programme, established with the first transplant in 2013, continues to grow. In addition, CKD clinics operate in all four districts to support early detection and management.
The Department is led by consultant nephrologists, supported by experienced medical officers, dialysis nurses, and transplant coordinators — all committed to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred renal care across Brunei Darussalam.
